Celebrating The Past, Preserving The Future
Heritage Mahurangi, a community-driven initiative formed in 2022, is bringing local history to life while safeguarding the region's cherished landmarks.
The establishment of Heritage Mahurangi stemmed from a public meeting at Warkworth’s Bridgehouse Lodge, where more than sixty individuals from various community groups united around a shared concern - the loss of valued historical assets and stories.
Recognising the need to preserve Warkworth’s architectural treasures and promote its rich history, Heritage Mahurangi works collaboratively with schools, churches, and established organisations, championing the “Preservation, Protection, and Promotion” of Mahurangi’s historical legacy. The group aims to foster a deep appreciation for the past within the community.
One of the group’s first challenges involved advocating for the preservation of Warkworth’s historic weir, located adjacent to the Bridgehouse. Established nearly 190 years ago to supply fresh water to local industry, the weir has since become a critical asset for protecting fish species and attracting visitors to the picturesque Mahurangi River. Its preservation remains a testament to the group's commitment to honouring the region’s heritage.
Since its inception, Heritage Mahurangi has steadily grown in membership and impact. Highlights of its work include coordinating Warkworth’s 170th Anniversary celebrations in 2023, plus an event for Descendants of local Pioneering families. The group has also produced a Walking & Driving Heritage Trail brochure, available at the Warkworth and Matakana Information Centres and various local stores. Most recently they’ve initiated an ongoing project to install Heritage Plaques on historic buildings, featuring QR codes linking to additional information.
Heritage Mahurangi’s newly launched website serves as a hub for the region’s history. Featuring the group's foundation principles along with much of Warkworth's history, photographic archives, details of local landmarks, Global-Towns affiliates and opportunities for community involvement.
Through projects that inspire connection and pride, Heritage Mahurangi continues to ensure the stories of the past remain vibrant for future generations.
