Trading The Paddock For The Beach
Surfing for Farmers (SFF) is a unique New Zealand-based initiative that began in Gisborne in 2018, empowering farmers to take a break from their all-consuming businesses and engage in outdoor activities.
Founded by Stephen Thomson, the programme was established to support the well-being of farmers by providing a break from the demands of farm life through the joy of surfing. Its goal is simple but powerful - to help farmers experience the therapeutic benefit of the ocean, learn a new skill, and connect with other members of the rural community.
What sets SFF apart from other initiatives is its combination of physical activity and community support. The pressures of farming can be isolating and stressful, so SFF creates a welcoming environment where farmers can unwind, meet with friends, and enjoy the water in a lowpressure setting. All equipment, lessons, and refreshments are free of charge, ensuring SFF remains inclusive and accessible to all individuals who can benefit from it, regardless of their financial circumstances.
Showcasing its tangible impact on the lives of those involved, SFF has seen an impressive participation of over 8,000 farmers and growers since its inception. All levels are welcome, and no prior surfing experience is needed, and the programme provides surfboards, wetsuits, and coaching to participants, ensuring everyone can jump in and have fun. Each session wraps up with a BBQ on the beach, giving participants a chance to connect.
Today, Surfing for Farmers runs in 28 locations across New Zealand, with Waipu Cove being one of those. Farmers are invited to join the weekly surf session with this season’s first sessions kicking off on Wednesday 8 January at 6pm, and continuing at the same time every week through until March. Without adding stress to farmers already busy schedules no commitment is necessary and registration is welcome throughout the season.
Understanding the industry is centred around family and community, SFF warmly welcomes families to join in the fun and support, though the focus remains on farmers, with equipment and lessons reserved for adults. Kids are welcome to bring their own gear and enjoy the water under adult supervision.
The initiative is made possible thanks to local sponsorships from businesses such as Fonterra and The Vet Centre, and the dedication of volunteers. For those interested in contributing or participating, Surfing for Farmers is always looking for sponsors and volunteers to help make this initiative thrive.
