Since its launch in October 2019, Village Picnic has been supporting local artisans with its picnic gift hampers. Now, founder Philippa Potaka is expanding, taking her venture on the road with Village Picnic to You.
Over the past four years Village Picnic has adapted to challenges, shifting its direction to offer unique experiences like scavenger hunt Mystery Picnics, further showcasing the Matakana region and its producers. Now Philippa has introduced a fresh concept with Village Picnic to You, a mobile charcuterie and cheese cart available for event hire.
Inspired by the ‘Build Your Own Cheese Box’ concept pioneered by London sisters Catherine and Toria Smith, Philippa wanted to bring a similar idea to New Zealand. However, opening a brick-and-mortar shop was not feasible, so instead she envisioned a mobile version. Village Picnic to You combines Philippa’s love of entertaining and serving great food with a fun, interactive and memorable foodie experience that is sure to impress.
A first for the region and one of only a few nationwide, the cart enables guests to create their own mini picnic platters from a selection of local premium cheeses, cured meats, and accompaniments, presented in a visually unique way. Perfect for any occasion, from weddings to corporate gatherings, the elegantly designed cart can be branded accordingly, adding a unique, Instagram- worthy flair to any event.
Since its conception, Philippa has chosen to engage local talent to bring her vision to life. From illustration design by ex-Mahurangi College art teacher James Nicholls to the cart’s design and construction by Simon from Hawken Builders, solid in structure but also collapsible for easy transportation. Every aspect of Village Picnic to You reflects Philippa’s dedication to local collaboration.
The cart features carefully curated and locally sourced products from Matakana Smokehouse, Puhoi Cheese, Rootstock Larder, Salty River Farm, and Daily Organics, among others. Beyond food, Philippa collaborates with local artisans to create unique experiences, such as Paint n Picnic with Creative Moments and Pottery n Picnic with Clay Friends, showcasing her commitment to supporting and celebrating the region’s vibrant creative scene.
