The Bunker is Mangawhai’s newest destination, blending live sports, great food, and state-of-the-art golf simulators for a one-of-a-kind experience.
Dreamed up by lifelong buddies Dave Bell, Lyndon Johnson, and Ellen Johnson, The Bunker began as a casual idea. As local tradies with already established businesses, they were eager to tackle a new and exciting project. Passionate golfers and sports enthusiasts, the trio initially considered creating a driving range. But the idea of using golf simulators meant they could bring the excitement of the course into the relaxed environment of a sports bar. Dave refers to it as ‘the kiwi dream’ - a vision that came to life when they secured a lease in Mangawhai Central last June.
Already a popular destination known for its stunning golf courses, The Bunker is well- positioned to become a favourite hang out among locals and visitors alike. “We are filling a gap in the market for a venue that offers live sports as the primary focus,” says Dave.
Introducing a fresh concept to Mangawhai, The Bunker features golf simulators from Premium Golf Simulators New Zealand, the exclusive distributor of Foresight Sports launch monitors and software in New Zealand. These simulators offer a high definition experience, allowing users to play courses from all around the world, including a virtual round at Tara Iti before heading out to the real deal. With advanced data on clubhead speed, ball speed, launch angle, and more, players at all levels can refine their skills. The simulator experience is fully customisable, catering to both beginners learning the game and seasoned golfers honing their technique.
The interior of The Bunker combines a stylish sports bar with four state of the art golf simulators and multiple TVs for watching live sports. Blending modern design elements with the cosy, classic feel of a whiskey bar, the space features green walls and gold accents that evoke a day on the green. The tasteful décor, with its pops of colour, creates a sophisticated yet timeless look, capturing a modern old-school charm.
