Polish goodness

Finally the mystery of what or who would replace Plume Café in the heart of Matakana Village has been solved. A Polish family has made the move across the country to follow their heart and passion and open Goose Bakery & Café.

Freshly baked sourdoughs, scrumptious pastries and big smiles are what you can expect when you walk through Goose Bakery’s door. They have put in a lot of work to make the place alive again. Ola, the baker of the business, has a love of baking that she says is impossible to control – baking day and night, always trying to learn new things and test out new recipes. She started baking in her gap year and once finishing her tertiary education at Toi Whakaari New Zealand Drama school, she decided to make her way back to baking. Michał, her fiancée, is “very lucky to be coming back home and always having something to eat”, says Ola. “And it was because of this that Michal said ‘let's open a bakery!’”

Michał’s twin sister, Dorota, and Ola, “would always joke about opening up a little place serving Polish treats, but we never believed it would ever happen. But as a family everything is possible.”

Dorota and her big smile and infectious personality can be found behind the till, with Michał brewing the perfect organic Eighthirty coffee, and Ola throwing flour around in the bakehouse.

While Michał was renovating the main café house – painting, tiling and building – Ola and Dorota decided to open the bakehouse windows to start to introduce themselves to the locals and show them some of the goodies that they would have in the store. The reception was overwhelmingly positive and the locals so supportive, and from the beginning of May they have been fully open from Wednesdays to Sundays.

“With the future of Goose Bakery looking bright, it is our passion and determination to consistently bring delicious products (with a bit of Polish charm) to the local community who have been a massive support.”
