Historic meeting place by the water

Nestled right on the water's edge, The Mangawhai Tavern offers a very warm welcome and the chance to savour great food and chilled drinks while listening to the gentle lapping of the water only a few metres away. With a rotation of craft beers on tap, an extensive wine list, plus their own gin and tonic menu, there’s a tipple to suit every guest.

The Tavern boasts three distinctly different dining and drinking areas, each providing a unique experience. The garden bar offers expansive views across the harbour to the famed Mangawhai dunes, providing a picturesque backdrop for enjoying a meal or a drink. The recent addition of a container bar has made it even easier to grab a chilled brew while soaking in the scenery.

Inside, a spacious family dining area welcomes guests with a warm and inviting atmosphere. Chef Kris Malcolm has crafted a seasonal menu that features a modern mix of classic pub favourites, including burgers and fish and chips, alongside tapas inspired small plates, perfect for sharing. A variety of salubrious weekly specials keep regular diners coming back for more.

The public bar has undergone a recent transformation, emerging as an intimate and character-filled cocktail bar known as Lou’s Bar. This newly refurbished space is perfect for private functions, making it an ideal venue for birthdays, corporate events, and Christmas parties. On Friday nights, local DJs energise the crowd, and the extensive range of cocktails ensures there is something for every taste.

The Mangawhai Tavern is renowned for its live music scene, regularly hosting gigs that draw both locals and visitors. These regular intimate events feature some of New Zealand’s top acts, emerging artists, and tribute bands, while free Sunday sessions over the summer make The Tavern a lively hub of entertainment year round.

In addition to its vibrant nightlife, The Tavern also plays host to the extremely popular Mangawhai Tavern Market every Saturday morning. Situated in the grounds of the Tavern, the market is a fantastic place to mix and mingle to the sounds of live music while browsing a delightful array of treats, fresh breads, locally grown produce, and unique gifts.
