Founded by Damian Stephen and Sue Dassler, Mangawhai Road Corner Paddock began with a dream to live off the land and produce their own food. Damian’s background in the food industry and Sue’s expertise as a landscape gardener reflect their love for quality and nature. After purchasing a herd of River Rhine Italian Buffalo, Damian and Sue established the farm, adopting a slower-paced lifestyle near Mangawhai.
“The Buffalo are very friendly and sociable animals. They need plenty of attention,” says Damian. The buffalo herd, lovingly cared for, produces A2/A2 milk, known for its easy digestibility and rich nutrient profile. This milk contains only the A2 type of beta-casein protein, which can be gentler on the stomach for those who experience discomfort with regular cow’s milk.
Located on the farm, mere footsteps from the paddocks, the cheese factory is meticulously maintained by Damian, where every product is handcrafted with care. "Learning how to make the cheese has involved a lot of trial and error. Everything I know is self-taught," Damian says. This delicate process follows a series of thoughtful steps, producing everything from buffalo halloumi and feta to creamy buffalo yoghurt.
Sue’s bountiful garden adds another layer of charm to the farm, frequented by locals to purchase freshly harvested vegetables and herbs. “We don’t use any sprays. Instead, we rely on natural and organic products to manage pests and employ other natural remedies,” says Sue. This farm-to- table approach fosters a strong sense of community by showing people where their food comes from.
They are excited to announce their recent launch into Mangawhai New World, making their buffalo products available to the wider public. Their products can also be found at various local stockists in Mangawhai, Kaiwaka, Wakapara, and Albany. As buffalo milk farming is relatively new in New Zealand, with only a few suppliers nationwide, Mangawhai Road Corner Paddock is proud to be part of this unique and growing industry.
The rolling hills of Mangawhai are a special place where the buffalo roam freely.
