What are some of the negative impacts of money stress on our health?

Money stress can have profound impacts on our physical and mental health. It has been linked to depression, insecurity, anxiety, and poor health outcomes, including heart disease. Increased levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which is often associated with financial strain, can negatively impact our mood, mental well-being, and cause sleep disturbances, headaches, stomach aches, muscle tension, difficulty in being intimate, lack of focus and motivation, as well as difficulty in completing tasks.

Why do people stress about money?

People stress about money for various reasons. Apart from the need to meet basic human needs like food and shelter, we are often bombarded with images and messages that portray a luxurious lifestyle. This can trigger feelings of inadequacy and jealousy, leading to financial stress. Additionally, factors such as low income, high debt, unexpected expenses, job loss, business collapse, poor money management and budgeting, unexpected life events, and a lack of financial knowledge can contribute to money-related stress.

What are ways to cope with money stress?

Coping with money stress involves taking several steps:

• Assess your financial situation, including seeking advice from a qualified professional, and create a budget.

• Reduce and prioritise your expenses. Identify areas where you can cut back and focus on essential needs.

• Track your spending to gain a better understanding of where your money is going.

• Develop a debt-reduction plan and start saving. This can provide a sense of control and security.

• Reach out for help. Consult financial advisors, credit counsellors, or support groups for guidance and assistance.

• Practise self-care, including managing your emotions. Engage in activities that help you relax, reduce stress, and maintain a positive mindset.

Is money worth the stress?

Money itself is just a tool and is not inherently worth the stress it can cause. However, having financial stability and security can provide comfort and peace of mind. It allows us to meet our basic needs and pursue experiences and goals that contribute to our happiness and fulfilment. It's important to remember that money is not everything and cannot buy love, friendship, or happiness. Focussing on the things that truly matter in life can lead to a more fulfilling and nourishing existence. Ultimately, whether money is worth the stress is a personal choice, and finding a balance that aligns with your values and priorities is crucial.
