Everyday People, Extraordinary Sound - White Chapel Jak

Words Kaiya Irvine

‘One heart, everyday people, One love, everyday people, Together we will rise.’ These lyrics from one of White Chapel Jak’s original songs, Everyday People, perfectly encapsulate what the three band members represent.

It might sound like the beginning of a riddle - a queer Māori wahine, a Viking, and a cheeky boy next door start a band - but this unique combination has created musical magic across Aotearoa for the past 11 years, captivating audiences with their infectious energy and unforgettable performances.

While the term "covers band" might evoke expectations of singalongs and fun times, White Chapel Jak stands out by taking things to another level with their fresh, funky takes and remakes of favourite songs. Their Funk Medley, a 25-minute journey through 12 unexpected tracks, leaves audiences amazed and asking, “How do they do that?” The answer lies in their deep musical knowledge, natural talent, and genuine ‘to their core’ love for music and performing.

Fronting the band is Bonnie Hurunui, whose infectious energy, funky and soulful voice, and magnetic laugh lights up every stage she steps onto. With a personality as magic as her hair, and a strong performative artistry, Bonnie invites audiences to become participants in a musical experience composed and curated from the stage - a talent she has developed from countless hours of live performances and her genuine love for connecting with people through music.

Nathan Boston, the band’s lead guitarist, is all charm off stage with his sweet and endearing personality but delivers commanding energy during performances. With a diverse background that includes a classical guitar diploma and years of collaborating with singer-songwriters seeking musicians to add to their creative process, Nathan embraces every musical opportunity. This dedication has allowed him to develop a distinct and unmistakable sound that is entirely his own.

Anchoring the band is Dean ‘the Viking’ Tinning, whose masterfully composed groovebased beats form the heartbeat of White Chapel Jak. With a towering 6’4” frame, perfectly manicured beard, and magnetic energy, Dean is impossible to miss, even from the back of the stage. With years of professional experience under his belt, he has percussion in his blood which is heard every time he lays down a beat, creating the kind of music that moves people - literally.

White Chapel Jak’s achievements reflect their talent and dedication. They have opened for Ben Harper and Alanis Morissette, and entertained over 15,000 people at Auckland’s SeePort Festival performing alongside the Auckland Symphony Orchestra two years in a row. They won RNZ’s Battle of the Cover Bands competition in 2018 and most-listenedto RNZ podcast for the following months.

Leigh holds a special place in the band’s story. Not only is the Leigh Sawmill Café one of their favourite venues to perform at, but Bonnie and Nathan both call Leigh home. They’re always ready with a warm wave and a smile when locals spot them grabbing coffee or strolling along the beach, noting how their new hometown has a special feel in the air. If you’re lucky, you might even hear them creating their signature magical music.

For White Chapel Jak, it’s about more than just the music – it’s about creating a community. Their concerts bring people together in a shared experience that feels less like a performance and more like a family gathering. Their fans, collaborators, and onstage guests have all become part of a bigger story.

White Chapel Jak’s music carries a message of unity and celebration, reminding everyone that, at the end of the day, we are all just everyday people. With their unmatched talent, infectious energy, and deep connection to their audiences, White Chapel Jak continues to inspire and entertain across Aotearoa, and all are welcome to join them.
