High Energy Jazz, Big Band Performance - WBB bigband.nz

A passionate group of musicians is making a name for itself in Auckland’s music scene with high energy shows that blend classic swing, modern jazz, funk, and pop.

With exceptional jazz vocalists, a 14-piece horn lineup, and a powerhouse rhythm section, local band WBB bigband.nz has a versatile repertoire, entertaining audiences with modern hits and timeless classics.

Formerly known as the Warkworth Big Band, in 2019 a small group of musicians set out to reinvigorate the group’s musical style under the guidance of trumpeter and manager Buck (Aaron) Rodgers. A significant change in direction from its brass band roots, which stretch back to 1884, the band has modernised its sound while respecting the long history of the brass band.

Much more than just a change in name, this transformation was a complete refresh of the group’s approach to music and its ethos. Recognising the need to evolve, the band recruited new members and introduced a modern style, quickly gaining attention for its new sound and culture. As word spread, talented musicians from across the Auckland region joined the band, elevating its performance and drawing in both seasoned jazz enthusiasts and multigenerational audiences.

With generous support from Pub Charity, the band was able to upgrade its rehearsal space, transforming it into a near studio- quality room, while investing in modern PA systems and quality instruments further enhanced the group’s rehearsal and live performance sound.

As WBB bigband.nz’s reputation has grown, so has its membership and reach, reflecting its broader influence within the Auckland musical community - where about half of its members now come from outside the original Warkworth area. To better represent its modern identity, the band rebranded as WBB bigband.nz and has since built a strong reputation for putting on high-energy, entertaining gigs. The band has successfully merged a respect for big band jazz history with fresh, innovative musical ideas to appeal to a wider audience.

Committed to developing young talent, WBB bigband.nz proudly features members of various ages and backgrounds. Gifted 15-year-old drummer Liam Glynn, 14-year- old trumpet player Macy Rodgers, and 17-year-old tenor saxophonist Anna Williams-Mart have all studied under renowned jazz educator Dr. Dave Lisik and earned recognition through multiple musical scholarships. With continued support from Pub Charity, the band is also funding musical scholarships for Warkworth Primary School, sponsoring 10 students to receive free music lessons.

WBB bigband.nz continues to build its presence in the Auckland scene and is actively seeking private and corporate bookings to supplement their numerous public gigs. The band welcomes new, talented musicians who share its passion for big band music as it continues its journey, mixing respect for the past with a commitment to continuous improvement in live performance and sound quality while mentoring the next generation.
