Olive oil for the win
Sally and Derek Holland have been involved in the olive oil business since 1998, growing, harvesting and marketing their own extra virgin olive oil. After 25 years working in the EVOO industry in New Zealand they continue to gain recognition for their talents, as their latest win for Duck Creek Olive Oil reflects.
Originally based on Waiheke Island, as well as their olive oil business the couple grew their own wine, which had a great following, and offered fine accommodation which was a standout in the wedding market. After eleven years of residing at Duck Creek Olive Grove, Derek and Sally have created a breathtaking environment for themselves. Their grove has been beautifully crafted and nestled in park-like grounds where the grove is consistently producing high quality extra virgin olive oil.
Their multi awarded olive oil has a strong following, and rightly so. Not only for its taste but also for its healthy high polyphenol content, Duck Creek Olive Oil continues to be a fan favourite. They have consistently won top awards from the industry and are active members of New Zealand Olives and Oliveti New Zealand. A much deserved win this year, Sally and Derek took out the Northern Oliveti Trophy for Best in Show and Best in Class; the third time in the history of the cup they’ve been awarded this honour. They also won silver for their single variety this year for New Zealand.
Carefully harvested annually with pruning completed slowly and carefully over the spring period, the grove is constantly evolving with the different varieties harvested. Some years see certain varieties not harvested, owing to the pruning the year before, while other varieties are singled out for use for processing. This year's harvest was a single vanity used, other years it can be a blended achievement. Only the best fruit is picked for processing and even then the fruit is strictly quality controlled prior to processing.
