The inside story

Liz Kerby is founder of Lizzie K & Co, and has a lifelong passion for the inner workings of houses and what that says about the people that live in them.

What is your niche market for your area of interior design?

My niche market is home-owners who are looking to renovate their existing homes and require design flair, expertise and industry experience to help them fully realise their home’s potential.

What services do you offer and what is the process?

I work alongside clients developing their design brief, creating an overall cohesive interior and exterior design scheme, with supporting detailed working plans and a design 'blueprint’, including specifications used for product sourcing, quoting, building works, and fit-out stages.

The Design Consultation Stage starts with an initial telephone chat to establish design services required. Followed by a one-and-a-half hour, in-home chargeable design meeting. This is followed by a Design Fee and Scope of Works for interior design services required.

The Design Concept and Development Stages includes 2D plans, 3D rendering, design Mood Boards, and specifications for kitchen and scullery design, bathroom, ensuite and laundry design, customised built-in storage solutions, interior surfaces finishes and fittings schemes.

Design Coordination and Fitout Stages include recommended product sourcing and procurement from my network of trade suppliers, liaison and site meetings with cabinet makers, suppliers and the building works team as required.

What areas do you cover?

The area I cover for interior design services is from Warkworth to Matakana Coast to Auckland North Shore and central suburbs.

What are Mood Boards and why do you use them?

Design Mood Boards are key visual tools that showcase the proposed designed style of each space. They include samples and images of the feature finishes and fittings scheme. They are perfect for keeping on track with cross references to notations on working plans and specification documents.

What is your personal experience in the industry?

I have been working in the interior and design industry most of my working life, including 25-plus-years in bespoke kitchen and bathroom design, residential renovations, interior schemes, and project coordination; commercial interior and exhibition design; furniture design and development for a retail brand. I also studied a Diploma Course in Interior Design and have a SketchUp for Interior Design certification.

Why should people use you to design the interior of their homes?

I’ve had the privilege to work with many types of clients, projects and budgets. Whether a new kitchen or bathrooms are required, or an interior paint and finishes scheme, I will listen carefully to understand clients’ needs and follow through with creative solutions.
