Setting standards

Duncan Northcott started designing tables in 2018 for family and friends and it soon became a thriving business. Here he talks about what sets his tables apart from the rest, and his plans for the future.

How did Benchmark Build start, and what inspired the business?

Benchmark started when my parents had some 20 year old dry gum that they wanted to put to use, so we decided to build an outdoor rustic table for the family to gather around, and from there I found my niche. I work full-time as a qualified builder so after work and weekends I’m in the shed building tables.

What types of furniture does Benchmark Build make?

Benchmark builds a range of indoor and outdoor table sets, and in the near future there will also be outdoor lounging sets.

What is a typical day like?

My typical day is going to work at 7am, getting home at 4.30pm, and straight into answering people’s enquiries and building the tables. When the table is finished, it’s on the trailer and off for delivery.

How are the pieces of furniture crafted, and what is the design process?

My tables are very well thought of, using the correct fixings to stand the test of time and making sure I get all the dry timber. After the table is fully built, I put on two coats of oil or stain depending on what the client wants. I have designed my tables mocking up different legs to see what will work, and doing research on how strong the legs will be. Clients send me a message about what they’re after and pay the 50% deposit, and from there the table is built with a quick turnaround.

What sets you apart from other furniture makers, and why should people choose your products?

My tables are hand-crafted by myself with perfection in mind.

I use thick timber to make them as strong as they can be which sets me apart from the big makers of furniture. Each piece has its own quirk that stands out.

What kind of wood is used and how is it treated?

I mainly deal with macrocarpa as I love the look of the timber once oiled or stained. It’s easy to work with and is long lasting. Two coats of oil/stain helps protect it even more.

Where does your business operate, and who buys your furniture?

My business is located in Mangawhai Heads and I have buyers all over the North Island from Kaitaia to Palmerston North.

What do you do when you’re not working or making tables?

I enjoy getting out to the beach and walking my dog. When I have a weekend free getting away in the roof-top tent somewhere, well away from the nearest town.
