A Life in Creativity
Flicka Williams’ global journey has been one of bold ideas, creative pivots, and saying yes to the unexpected.
With creativity in her veins since she could hold a paintbrush, Flicka credits her grandmother - a brilliant watercolour artist - as her first inspiration. Afternoons were spent side by side capturing landscapes and native flowers with just a few delicate strokes. "Those afternoons shaped me," she reflects. "They fuelled a love for art that carried me through school and straight into a Bachelor of Communication Design at Massey University."
Completing her degree with a final project that earned an honours mark, she found herself boarding a plane to Melbourne - portfolio in hand, ready for a real-world experience. Flicka landed a junior designer role at Hoyne Design, a buzzy studio where she cut her teeth on packaging, publishing, and a whole lot of creative chaos. Five years flew by before the travel bug bit hard - London was calling.
Armed with a backpack and a growing portfolio, Flicka freelanced her way through the city until landing at branding agency, Interbrand London. "It was next-level - big agency, big clients, and even bigger opportunities," she recalls. After a couple of whirlwind years, she decided to swap grey skies for sunshine, transferring to Interbrand’s Sydney office. The team was world-class, fast, fierce, and frighteningly talented, she recalls, saying "I learned more in those five years than I ever thought possible."
Then life took another turn - enter, pregnancy. As much as she loved design, agency life suddenly lost its sparkle and when her first baby arrived, Flicka discovered a whole new creative obsession: picture books. "I inhaled them, analysed them, and - thanks to a very productive, wine-fuelled chat with my friend (and cousin-in-law) Hannah Davison - we decided to create our own." And just like that, My Big Moments was born - a series of personalised kids’ books tackling life’s tricky transitions.
Fast forward eight years, five books, two more kids, and all the chaos of life, and a new adventure emerged: co-creating Untidy Podcast with Matilda Green and her business partner, Hannah Davison. What began as a raw, real, and hilarious deep dive into parenting has morphed into an award- winning show, taking home both Gold and Silver at the New Zealand Podcast Awards. Now, they’re helping other indie podcasters land sponsorship deals - "because, let’s face it, good content deserves to be heard."
Six months ago, Flicka traded Sydney for Matakana and has found herself at home in a creative, supportive, wine-loving haven. As for what’s next? "I have no idea," she admits. "But if the past decade has taught me anything, it’s that saying yes - preferably over rosé - tends to lead to the best adventures."
