Wild Swimming and Yoga

Ready to gain the confidence, stamina and courage to explore uncharted territory? Leigh local, Kaye Mueller, invites sea enthusiasts of all levels to join adventures that are worth diving into.

Whether you’re a sea-loving novice swimmer, a transitioning lapster or a seasoned salty, under her YogiFish brand Kaye has created three boutique swimming and yoga retreats to suit all needs and speeds right here in our big blue front yard.

Her upcoming four-day Beginners’ Wild Swimming & Yoga Experience, scheduled for early December, caters to those eager to embrace ocean swimming but who may feel nervous. Ideal for newbies to ocean swimming, this retreat provides participants the chance to build confidence, learn essential techniques, receive gear tips, and master important open-water swimming skills. With guidance and support from trained crews, swimmers can enjoy safe open-water swims, exploring protected bays, hidden beaches, and the region’s crystal-clear waters.

“I talk to many people who long to get into the ocean. They say that they love swimming but are not ready yet. Perhaps it’s because they’re scared of being left behind, of shadows in the sea, of waves and currents, of not being good/fast/fit enough,” Kaye explains. “This retreat is their chance to gently lay those fears to rest in a deeply supported long weekend of ocean fun, yoga, camaraderie, and confidence-building.”

With enough confidence, participants might be inspired to join YogiFish’s Mid-Distance Wellness Adventure in February or Safaris for Seasoned Salties in March. As ‘pod leader’ for Leigh Swimmers, Kaye knows the best places to explore on Leigh’s coastline; from New Zealand’s oldest marine reserve to secluded bays, crystal-clear inlets, caves, and underwater canyons, it’s the perfect setting for these explorations.

All three adventures combine one to two ocean swims a day, fully catered nourishing meals, different styles of yoga and mindfulness practices from local specialists, and technique tips and stroke correction from trained coaches, culminating in an unforgettable ocean swim off the glass-bottom boat near Te Hāwere- a-Maki/Goat Island.

Those who’ve been ‘swimfluenced’ in home waters, may also like to join Kaye on one of her YogiFish retreats in Niue and Aitutaki. “I highly value experiential immersion, discovery, and connection,” says Kaye. “The Pacific Islands offer the perfect winter escape where we focus the exploration of land, culture, sea, and self.”
