Established in 1986, the Warkworth Gamefish Club forms the Sportfishing Division of the Sandspit Yacht Club, bringing together fishing enthusiasts in this coastal locale.
With a welcoming group of around 300 active core members, the club is lucky to call the Sandspit Yacht Club’s clubrooms home, enjoying use of the bar and kitchen with the team ensuring every event is well catered.
Fostering connection and community, the club hosts three major tournaments throughout the year including One Base, held at Great Barrier Island and timed to coincide with the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council Nationals in February. The second event in the club’s line-up is a 10kg Line Class Tournament on King’s Birthday weekend (measure only) – the longest-running competition of its kind in the Hauraki Gulf, often selling out weeks in advance. Rounding out the calendar is the fast-growing Ladies Competition in November (measure only), a fun-filled event that promises a great day on the water followed by lively celebrations back at the Yacht Club.
For year-round engagement, members enjoy a friendly monthly contest to land the longest snapper, with a $100 Hunting & Fishing voucher as the prize. It’s a fantastic way to stay active and connected, particularly during the quieter months.
The club also caters to younger fishing enthusiasts with a kids’ fishing day held every December on the Yacht Club wharf. Trophies from the club’s extensive collection are awarded at the mid-year Annual General Meeting, celebrating achievements and fostering pride among members.
Warkworth Gamefish Club maintains strong ties with the local community, thanks to the generous support of local businesses that contribute to its events. Their backing ensures high-quality tournaments with impressive prize pools. The club also offers a qualified weighmaster service, with certified scales conveniently located across Matakana, Sandspit, Omaha, Leigh, Warkworth, and Great Barrier Island.
As an affiliated member of both the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council and International Game Fish Association, the club provides its members with reciprocal benefits when visiting or competing at other clubs nationwide.
