Waipu’s River Walk -Shaped by the Community
Words Olivia Freestone
The Waipu River Walk stands as a community-driven project that has turned a stretch of riverside into an easy loop trail with scenic views.
Starting at Waihoihoi Park, the trail winds along the river to Nova Scotia Drive before circling back into town, taking about an hour to complete. In 2019, the Whangārei District Council provided funding for a community- led initiative in Waipu. By 2020, a local committee was established to collect input from residents, and the Waipu River Walk emerged as the chosen project. While the funding was essential, it was the dedication of the community that brought the plan to fruition, turning the area into a scenic green space for both locals and visitors.
Over the past few years, the project has gained momentum through regular working bees, where volunteers have cleared weeds, planted native plants, and shaped the path. With each passing season, the trail has evolved, becoming a beloved space for locals to enjoy.
The Waipu River Walk is now a perfect leisurely walk for both locals and visitors. It offers an accessible route through heritage-rich areas, providing ample opportunities to enjoy nature, with stunning river views along the way. The walk itself is suitable for all ages, and it’s a great way to take in the natural beauty of Waipu. Local resident James Alexander shares how he loves walking along this trail with his young daughters, acknowledging that its clear and wide pathways are perfect for prams and kids.
As the walk continues to grow, additional improvements are underway. The muddy patches that once slowed walkers have been addressed, and signage is being installed to highlight key features of the local environment. Visitors are encouraged to stop and enjoy the recently added seating, providing the perfect spot to take in the tranquil surroundings.
Waipu River Walk is a testament to the power of community collaboration. It’s a space where locals come together, connect, and create something lasting for generations to enjoy. For those looking to experience Waipu’s beauty, this river walk is not to be missed.
