Hemy Pottery

Having grown up in the area Hannah moved to the big city for a few years, eventually returning to enjoy a more laid-back way of life. Based in Whangateau for two years now, she loves living and working in the area again. “It is so peaceful and uplifting to be surrounded by nature and bird calls while I work,” says Hannah.

In 2021, Hannah unearthed a newfound passion for pottery, embarking on a journey to craft fun, happy, colourful pieces designed to brighten people's lives and homes. Inspired by her initials, she launched 'Hemy Pottery' as a small business during lockdown, dedicating herself to handcrafting each piece on her wheel or through meticulous hand-building and painting. “It gave me so much joy and something productive to focus on during the rough times of lockdown,” she reflects.

Hannah is driven by her passion to spread joy and wants to continue to share the happiness her craft brings her by creating pieces that bring smiles to people's faces. “It absolutely makes my day when someone's face lights up upon seeing my stall at a market,” she shares. “Hearing how much happiness my pieces can bring to people makes all the hard work and long hours totally worth it.”

Hannah's upbeat nature and energy shines through in her creations, which feature playful shapes and vibrant paintings. “When people meet me at a market, they will often say how perfectly I match my work, which is the nicest compliment,” she adds. Her colourful dinnerware range includes popular items such as unique tumblers and mugs, some adorned with positive affirmations to start the day right. “My current favourite mugs are my animal themed ones, being a huge animal lover myself,” she notes. Beyond dinnerware, she also crafts vases, jewellery holders, spoon rests, and more.

Conscious of our environment, Hannah strives to keep her business eco-friendly and sustainable by only using recyclable packaging. She also notes one of the best things about working with clay is that anything unused is then recycled into new artistic creations.
