Championing outdoor access - Shelley Trotter
As a Trustee of the Matakana Coast Trail Trust, Shelley has devoted decades to enhancing public access and trail development in the Warkworth, Matakana, and Snells Beach regions. Her commitment to creating pathways for people to connect with nature is unmatched, with her property, Solway Deer Farm, set to host a remarkable 4.5 kilometres of the proposed trail.
Shelley's academic background in Environmental Science and Geography, culminating in a Master of Science, provides her with a solid foundation for her endeavours. Yet, it is her hands-on approach and wealth of practical experience that truly set her apart. Whether it's wielding tools to physically build trails or engaging with communities to foster an understanding of access rights, Shelley is always at the forefront.
Also a member of the Mahurangi Trail Society, Shelley is actively involved in the development of trails bridging Warkworth and Snells Beach. Her vision extends beyond the creation of pathways; she champions a holistic approach that considers both community needs and environmental sustainability.
What distinguishes Shelley is not just her expertise in trail building, but her genuine care for the environment and the communities she serves. Her attention to detail and adherence to sound processes ensure that her projects not only endure but will thrive for generations to come.
In honouring Shelley Trotter with the Outdoor Access Champion Award, New Zealand acknowledges her as a true steward of the outdoors, a leader, and an exceptional community member. Her legacy of opening up the great outdoors to all is a testament to the impact that one individual can make.
