Junction congratulates Matakana artist Virginia Leonard on her First Merit award (second place) at the Portage Ceramic Awards 2015. Virginia has only been working in clay for around three years.
Her award-winning piece is entitled ‘Too Many Surgeons’. It’s a response to the chronic pain she suffers every day – the result of a motorcycle accident at the age of twenty.
“Chronic pain has no language, no voice,” says Virginia. “The language of my clay-making is my attempt to rid my body of trauma and reduce my level of chronic pain.”
She has a second piece in the exhibition – ‘Ward Rounds’. You can see both in the full show, which will be at the Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery in Titirangi (ex-Lopdell House) until February 7, 2106.
