Built in 1903, The Matakana Village Pub has been serving up delicious food, cold drinks, and great hospitality for over a hundred years. This year has seen The Matakana go from strength to strength, they have recently been named one of the 5 best gastropubs in Auckland.
Greg Lawrence took over the running of the pub in April 2016 and is a natural host. After 20 years of banking, he fits in perfectly and loves the lifestyle.
“I love the summer buzz and I also love winter when there is time to sit down and have a chat to the locals.”
Head Chef James Patterson and Front of House Manager Norah Yelverton have been working together now for over five years and make a great team. James is a true artisan and is always experimenting with new techniques. His focus is handcrafted food with the majority of the sauces, relishes and other seasonings being prepared in-house, right down to the mayo on the burgers. A testament to this was the pub’s recent Spring Dinner, which was a sellout event even before it was advertised. The Pub’s Pit smoker has also been a huge hit with many dishes on the menu being prepared from it.
To Greg the focus of The Matakana is clear. “We pride ourselves on serving delicious creative food, in the most beautiful setting in Matakana, by the friendliest staff you will meet. At The Matakana you will always be greeted with a friendly smile and a warm welcome, making every visit a memorable one.”
The Matakana is a community icon and there is always plenty of events to keep the punters entertained. The pub hosts a popular Open Mic Night on Thursdays, which is helping to build the local music scene. There is live music every Saturday in November. The Summer Sessions series will also be back this summer, offering live music every Saturday and Sunday during January and February. And of course, the ever-popular New Year’s Beach Party will be back, this year featuring top DJ’s Grant Marshall, Rob Martyn, and Sample Gee.
The Matakana is ready to embrace the holidays, with three new Christmas packages for groups. The outdoor fireplace area has been revamped and is warm, bright and inviting. The dining room offers private spaces for groups and the beer garden is second to none. The festive atmosphere of the Matakana makes it a great place to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year.
