The votes are in! Taking out the overall Junction Business Award for 2017 is Katya Maker Boutique.
While just two years old, this prestigious competition has captured the hearts of our business community. Voting nearly tripled this year, with over 2,400 people taking the time to support a loved local business. Finalists and winners were diverse, showing just how vibrant business is on the Matakana Coast.
Were you surprised to have won?
Very pleased, but not necessarily surprised. Katya Maker brand has been going from strength to strength for the past six years and we were sure our loyal customers and followers would express their support with a vote.
What makes your business special?
The love that we put into everything we do.
We focus on our customers, quality products and trying to create an experience that becomes a memory. We believe success is about a number of things, not just in the brands we stock, or the price point. We put our heart and soul into what we do and many of our customers have become great friends over the years.
Who are your customers?
We have a wide scope of local customers from all parts of Greater Auckland, with a number of fashion savvy women coming from the Far North and beyond. We also have a very strong overseas following, people who come and see us every time they visit New Zealand.
Is local business booming?
With the area growing, we have to keep our standards high to meet the aesthetically educated women who have very high expectations.
Our new customers from different backgrounds definitely add to the melting pot of ideas that is Katya Maker.
What changes have you noticed since starting out or moving to the area?
I have been living in the Warkworth area for more than 15 years and the changes I have seen are in every aspect of life. They have given us the opportunity to explore our passions and the key has been to keep evolving.
What’s the best thing about being a local business?
The genuine, down to earth, friendly and real people we meet every day is very inspiring. Recently I had a customer ask me, “Why are you based in Warkworth? You should consider moving into Auckland.”
But we have a great local following, we employ local people and we are not just an address, or a place. We are a destination.
What are your plans for the future?
To continue to provide the excellent service we are renown for, keep growing our customer base, locals and beyond. There are people that have been living in the area for 40 years that still don’t know we exist.
Do you have any special message for those who voted for you or regular customers?
Thank you to our customers. We are grateful for the community support and we will keep providing hard to find, one of a kind garments and accessories from around the world.
“Cutting edge cool,” as our fabulous Gabrielle Colley describes Katya Maker Store.
Do you have a special message for your staff?
I would like to thank, Maree Owston-Doyle for being my right hand since the very beginning. Ruby-Rose Witcher, Morgan Kay, Paula Hammond and my husband, Brad. The front and behind curtains staff, for all their hard work, skills, commitment and knowledge during the years. They all helped make Katya Maker the brand it now is.
