If you had to imagine your ideal family outing, you might end up describing the newly-founded Gypsy Fair Extravaganza, a unique blend of market stalls, arts and craft, food, musical entertainment and kids shows. Why ‘Extravaganza’? Mels Berg, one of the cofounders says, “We had so many good ideas, we decided to do them all! It soon grew into something so huge and exciting that it needed a huge name.” They formed a Charitable Trust, and stretched their ideas to the maximum, incorporating their commitment to using only compostable and recyclable packaging, and returning profits to the communities who support them.
Travelling the country in a colourful array of house trucks and buses – cosy homes for whole families sometimes – this travelling roadshow is made up mostly of people who have previously sold their wares at fairs, markets and festivals. They have a good idea of what the public want: a great day out, cool stuff to buy, yummy food and drinks, entertaining music, and lots of interesting things to do and see.
Not content with offering all the usual stalls that the public loves at Gypsy Fairs – face painting, tarot and palm readers, herbal remedies, heaps of funky clothing, amazing jewellery and crafts – The Extravaganza has created a unique event that will leave you buzzing. There is free entry, lots of free things to do, including old-school games like hoola hoop, puppet shows, tug of war and sack races. You can even attend free hoola hoop workshops with Summer Spins (as seen on NZ’s got Talent). Their giant kaleidoscope is bound to be a hit with the whole family and no child will be able to resist the huge bouncy castle.
To ensure the very best experience for everyone, there are healthy food options (though if traditional fairground food is your preference you’ll find that too) and throughout both days they have talented musicians on stage for your entertainment. In keeping with the theme of community involvement, the Gypsy musicians encourage other performers, particularly locals, to share the stage and join in the fun. Chances are noone will want to go home at the end of the day. They have that covered too – check out the available stall options and join them on the road!
